Salvation through Jesus Christ Alone

The Bible verses and explanation below express the Gospel or Good News of how to be saved from the penalty for your sins and enter into a new, eternal relationship with God by trusting in His Son, Jesus Christ.  All Scripture verses are taken from the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible.

God’s plan:  love for us

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”  (John 3:16-17)

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.  (I John 4:9)

Our problem:  sin and death

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  (Romans 3:23)

The wages of sin is death,  (Romans 6:23a)

God’s solution:  Jesus Christ, who died for our sins on the cross, rose from the dead, and lives in heaven as Lord

But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 6:23b)

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  (Romans 5:8)

I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.  (I Corinthians 15:3-7)

Our necessary response:  faith in Jesus

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  (Romans 10:9)

To all who did receive him [Jesus], who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.  (John 1:12-13)

Jesus is the only way to be saved

Jesus said…“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

[speaking of Jesus]  “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

The opportunity is yours – you can be sure of your salvation!

[Jesus said], “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.  Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.“  (Revelation 3:19-20)

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.  (1 John 5:11-13)

What does all this mean?

What the above Bible verses teach is that God, who created you, loves you, and wants to have a relationship with you.  But there's a problem.  Each of us has broken God's laws and selfishly gone our own way.  The Bible calls this sin.  Because God is holy and just, He must punish sin.  The penalty for sin is spiritual death, or separation from God.  But because of His great love for us, God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect life and then die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin.  You can be forgiven for your sins and receive the gift of eternal life by trusting in Jesus as your Savior, and surrendering your life to Him as your Lord.  You can do this in prayer, such as the following:

Dear Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner.  I believe you died for my sins and rose from the dead.  I now turn from my sin and trust in you as my Savior.  I open my heart to receive you as my Lord.  I surrender my life into your hands.  Fill me with your Spirit.  In your name I pray, Amen.

If you just genuinely prayed that prayer, you are now a member of God’s family!  You've started a new and eternal life as a disciple of His Son, Jesus Christ, and have received the Holy Spirit and the gift of eternal life!  We encourage you to find a church to attend where the Bible is preached and Jesus is exalted as Lord. Pray and read the Bible every day (perhaps beginning with the Gospel of John), and share your faith in Jesus with others you know.  If you have any questions, feel free to call 888-NEEDHIM.  God bless you in your new life of faith in Jesus!
